ITINERARY: 4–Day Transylvania Tour (Comfy)
Cluj Napoca return
Day 1: Cluj Napoca — Szék
We depart Cluj Napoca airport, or at a pick up point arranged in Town (your hotel for example). This town was the centre of culture and capital of Transylvania throughout history. It is now a strange mixture of beautiful 14th–18th Century architecture and ugly communist blocks of the Ceausescu regime. After we have everyone, we head out of town to the village of Szék. After checking into our guest house and a walk around the village we have dinner at the guest house resteraunt for our first evening together.
Accommodation: Guest House Szék
Day 2: Szék
After breakfast at the hotel we take a short drive to the 600 year old castle ruin in Bonchida. This castle was a popular resting place for gentry travelling between Budapest and Bucharest in 18 hundreds and is famous amongst musicians for the story of Count Banffy and his coat. When the count was returning from Budapest in the snowy winter, he asked for his Bunda (Big sheep skin coat) to be brought to the train station. His staff misheard and brought his Banda (Band) who played for him on the cold platform as he got off the train!
Returning to Szék for a home cooked lunch we then have a chance to look inside one of the oldest houses in the village and learn about the local handcrafts, history and costumes in the brightly blue painted interiors of Szék.
Before dinner we will help prepare the meal with our host family, learning how to cook a local speciality. The local band will arrive in the late afternoon, to serenade us over dinner in the garden. When we are ready, we return to our Guest house for the night.
Accommodation: Guest House, Szék
Day 3: Cluj Napoca — Palatka
After breakfast, a short drive through the valleys and hidden villages brings us to the Romanian village of Palatka. After arriving we have a chance to learn a bit about the local music and customs before lunch. After a short rest time, we continue by horse and cart for a small tour of the village and a visit to the shepherds to see how the local cheese is made. Finishing the tour at our hosts' house (local musician family), enjoy a home cooked meal with the village band and a drink in the garden overlooking the village, for our last night together. When we are ready we will head in to the hotel in Cluj for the night.
Accommodation: Hotel, Cluj Napoca
