Carpathian Tours was established by Sally Corry and Dusan Hegli in
2003. Sally is a musician with The Transylvaniacs in Sydney
Australia. She has spent the last 13 years travelling to the villages
of Slovakia, Hungary & Romania researching and collecting
Hungarian, Romanian & Rom village music. Dusan is the artistic
director of the Ifju Szivek Ensemble (Slovak State Hungarian
Ensemble) and besides being one of the most outstanding dancers in his
field today, has also travelled widely to villages learning and
collecting the dance.
Together we thought that this music, dance and culture was so
special it should be seen and experienced by as many people as
possible. We also believe that cultural tours will provide work for
local musicians and encourage the next generation to take up the
tradition. As we had already done the hard work of discovering
musicians and dancers in the fields and bars of the Carpathian
Mountains, the next step of bringing the tour to them has been easy and
This is a small company specialising only on this particular region.
Rather than running many different tours around the world, we plan very
well researched and informative tours drawn from personal experience
and attention to detail.
Group sizes are kept to a minimum of 5 people and a maximum of 12
people. This means that the groups are large enough for some different
company and new friendships to form, whilst remaining small enough to
enjoy personalised service, individual attention and access to villages
After more than 10 years of travelling to and from Slovakia, Hungary
and Romania on field research trips, we know how hard it can be to
organise the simplest things. The next meal, the bus ticket, the
timetables and bureaucracies can be daunting and exhausting to deal
with. Carpathian Tours aim to provide you with faultless service,
organising everything necessary, so that you will not have to deal with
any of these small problems. We wish you to have a peaceful and
enjoyable trip from beginning to end!
A comprehensive reading list and information booklet will be sent to
all participants on receipt of booking. A detailed itinerary including
historical and cultural information on all destinations will be given
to you on the first day of the tour. Optional videos and talks will be
presented throughout the tour.
Recommendations and assistance can be given on which CDs, Books or
videos can be bought whilst on the tour. All tours are led by an
Australian guide with more than 10 years experience in the music and
dance history and culture.
