ITINERARY –Family Tour (Basic), 5

Budapest return to Transylvania, Romania

Day 1 – Budapest– Ture
We depart Budapest at 9am and have a relatively
long drive across the border into Romania finishing in the village of
Ture, just before the beautiful old city of Cluj Napoca (also known
as Kolosvár in Hungarian). With a lunch break in a Hungarian
restaurant and a walk through the forest, we arrive at the village in
the evening for dinner.

Day 2 - Ture
After breakfast, we take a tour of the village and
surrounds by local transport (Horse & cart), finishing back at
our host's house we enjoy a home cooked lunch. In the afternoon we
will visit a family famous for its painting. Here you can try
your hand at the local furniture painting with guidance
by the experts!
After a short rest, we will be serenaded under the
walnut tree, by the local band. A chance to learn about the music of
the region, or walk through the garden before dinner.

Day 3 – Szék
After breakfast we take a short drive to another
ethnically Hungarian village, Szék (still in Romania) stopping
at the 600 year old castle ruin in Bonchida on the way. This castle
was a popular resting place for gentry travelling between Budapest
and Bucharest in 18 hundreds and is famous amongst musicians for the
story of Count Banffy and his coat. When the count was returning from
Budapest in the snowy winter, he asked for his Bunda (Big sheep skin
coat) to be brought to the train station. His staff misheard and
brought his Banda (Band) who played for him on the cold platform as
he got off the train!
After a home cooked lunch in Szek, there will be
chance look inside one of the oldest houses in the village and walk
through with the geese to the salt lake filled with birds.
This evening will be a quiet one, giving us all a
chance to get to know our host family over a game of cards.

Day 4 – Szek
After breakfast we learn how to make local sweet
bread in the outside wood oven and look around the edge of the
village. For lunch we have a local soup and taste the proceeds
of our mornings work. After a rest we visit
the hat maker and then the kids have a chance to learn a bit of dance
from the locals. Adults are free to watch or walk with a local guide.
The band will arrive in the late afternoon, giving us an idea of how
evenings were spent before television and discos arrived in town.

Day 5 Szek – Budapest
Travelling back towards Hungary we stop in the
famous street-side markets were you can buy anything from a bottle to
a hand spun, woven, died & embroidered bedspread - all hand made
of course! Continuing through the spectacular gorges and forest we
have lunch in a Romanian restaurant by the river and some special
views at the highest point of our return journey. We then arrive back
in Budapest around 7pm.
*Any participant can choose to rest, or do
local sightseeing from the accommodation, rather than joining the
daily or evening programs if feeling like some time out (The cost of
meals, entry tickets and travel in such cases will not be covered by
Tour Cost from Budapest return $650AUD per person
twin share. A minimum of six paying adults is required on this tour.

coffee/tea, all transport from Budapest return by minibus, local
driver, accommodation, all entry fees, drinking water, musicians
fees, talks, one full time guide, tour design. You
should only need to take money for buying souvenirs, personal items
or the occasional encouraging note for the violin bow!
